A Brief
History of Renville Oast
‘Renville?derives its name from ‘ren? an old English word for an odd piece of land, and ‘ville? a corruption of field: hence renville, meaning ‘spare field'. Renville oast dates back to 1879. It was built to dry hops, grown in many acres surrounding the oast, for the brewery trade. It originally had two kilns, or roundels, and a third was added at a later date. The drying of hops continued until 1953, when the oast was used to store grain. The oast was converted during 1984/5
by the present owners into a family home. Many of the original features
were preserved. In the hurricane of 1987, some 5000 Kent peg tiles were
swept off the three kilns. Some of the tiles were found in the far end of
the field opposite the oast, such was the force of the wind! |
